No TV Tuesday. The last one posted on the “new” site was for March 1 (which I didn’t do). I’ll check in on it from time to time, but I’ll be going with another meme on Tuesday.
And it even looks like the TV Tuesday site is gone. Kaput. Adios. Sayonara. Maybe I’ll have to find another Tuesday meme.
TV Tuesday is back this week after a week’s hiatus. (It wasn’t a hiatus that I enforced, it was a hiatus by the website.)
It’s the biggest spectacle in all of sports–the Super Bowl. It’s more than just a game, it’s the pre-game, half-time show, post-game report and the coveted post-Super Bowl spot to pump up a show. And let’s not forget the commericals.
This week, we turn our attention to…the Super Bowl.
1. How much of this year’s Super Bowl did you watch? Do you watch any of the pre-game hype?
I didn’t watch a whole lot of the pre-game hype. That day I was busy making egg rolls; later I was watching the Rockets beat the Lakers. I did watch the entire game (except when I got up for food and/or beers).
2. What was your favorite commercial during the Super Bowl? Least favorite?
My favorite commercial was the one where the troops were simply walking through an airport and the entire group of civilians there began cheering. Could there have been a better one? Turns out it was a Budweiser commercial thanking our troops. My least favorite was the Blockbuster commercial where the guy simply backed down his driveway to his mailbox; it got old after the second showing.
3. Did you like the half-time show?
It was OK. Nothing too spectacular. I did hear the comment “Most of the kids in the front rows are young enough to be Paul McCartney’s grandkids!”.
4. What’s your favorite food to eat while watching the Super Bowl?
Whatever is available. I made my “World-Famous-In-The-Family” Egg Rolls, and they are always good. We also had some chip dips, some burgers and a lot of other munchies. OH! And some spicy shrimp!
~ BONUS ~ A lot has been made over the years about the post-Super Bowl slot to highlight or launch TV shows. It was the post-Super Bowl spot that brought us the A-Team and the Wonder Years. Do you stay up to watch the post-Super Bowl shows? What is the most memorable post-Super Bowl show you’ve seen?
I don’t really watch that stuff. After the Super Bowl, I went home and did a little work around the house, watched a movie, then went to bed.
Well, it is kind of late on Tuesday, but it’s still TV Tuesday!
Nick at Night is celebrating 20 years of giving us “classic” television in the evening. This year’s new show is the classic 80s sitcom Murphy Brown. Murph and company join the rotation of such sitcoms The Cosby Show, Family Ties, Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, The Munsters, Green Acres and many, many more that help introduce new generations to the great comedies of yesteryear.
This week, we take a look at the shows on Nick-at-Night.
1. Of the many shows that run on Nick-at-Night, what is the one that you would most enjoy sitting down and watching a marathon of?
Well, it’s not on Nick at Night any more, but when it was on I really enjoyed Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In. I remember watching the show when I was young and it was funny then; watching the re-runs on Nick at Night, it is STILL funny.
2. What classic show from yesterday has not made it to Nick-at-Nite yet, but you’d like to see it there?
Oh, let’s see. I like the show The Magician with Bill Bixby. I also liked the show The Second Hundred Years with Monte Markham.
3. Have repeat on Nick-at-Night given you a new appreciation of an older show? Which one?
Not really. I have watched a number of the old shows, but most are those that I either didn’t or couldn’t watch regularly back in the day.
4. What show that is currently on the air do you think our kids will be watching in 20 years on Nick-at-Nite?
Well, since I don’t watch hardly any network TV, I’m probably not the one to answer that. I hope to God that they don’t have any of the reality shows on then, though.
5. What is one show that Nick-at-Nite currently runs that you question if the classic label applies to?
I’d take issue with Roseanne. I thought the show was crass and the only redeeming feature on it was John Goodman. I’m not too crazy about Murphy Brown, either. I didn’t watch either one much when they were “popular”.
~ BONUS ~ Are there some shows that don’t repeat well in later years because they rely on topical humor? (For example, a lot of the Murphy Brown jokes rely on a knowledge of current events when they were produced) Do you sometimes find yourself getting the jokes that younger generations don’t? Do you think this topical humor helps or hurts shows from having a long life in repeats?
The shows that repeat well are those that have time-tested values that are reinforced again and again. Topical shows are not always the best for that. A show that will live forever in repeats is Little House on the Prairie. It’s all about the family values and love and togetherness. Another one is Touched by an Angel. (Of course another series of short-subject films that will live forever is The Three Stooges!!)
Here it is, folks, Tuesday again. So here it is, folks, TV Tuesday.
As TV fans, we hear it all the time–”This show has jumped the shark”
For those of you who might not be aware, there is a web site called JumptheShark.com. The site attempts to find the exact moment when a TV show goes from being really good to being not as good. The Jump the Shark refers to the infamous Happy Days episode where Fonzie jumped over a shark on water skis. After that, it was all downhill for the show. (If you head over to the Jump the Shark web site, you can see a huge database of shows and the moment when fans feel they made the fateful jump.)
Right now, fans are debating if a couple of shows aren’t becoming Shark bait. So, this week, we’ll take a look at just when good shows go wrong.
1. What is the worst Jump the Shark moment for a show that you’ve faithfully watched? Did you continue to watch after the show took the jump or did you give up in disgust?
I was a big fan of thirtysomething when it came out. I WAS thirtysomething at the time and it seemed to parallel my professional life; not the exact job lines, but the same situational portrayals that came up on the show. Then, the infamous “two guys in bed, kissing” episode. That was the last time I watched it. I’m not necessarily against gays, I just didn’t think that particular scene added anything to the story line at the time. The show died shortly thereafter.
2. Is there a show that you’re currently watching that you think has Jumped the Shark? Any show that currently is putting on a life vest and strapping on water skis?
Like I’ve said before, I don’t watch much network TV, so I can’t comment much on that. Of the shows I do currently watch, none of them have had a “jump the shark” moment.
3. Is there a show that has never taken the jump?
Oh, yeah. Hell, yeah. I think the original Star Trek series never jumped the shark. It was way ahead of its time, which explains why it lives so long in syndication. Also, I don’t think that M*A*S*H never jumped the shark; even though pretty much the entire cast was changed throughout the course of the show. Another show that never took the jump (or maybe took the jump every week!?) was Quantum Leap.
4. Is there a show that got close to jumping but then came back?
I can’t think of any right now; probably because I don’t watch too much network TV any more.
5. What elements do you think most contribute to a show making the jump?
The original writers leaving (or getting fired) and the replacement writers simply not being as good. They then have to come up with completely improbably story lines to keep fans going. Even the best actors can’t improve on bad story lines and bad script writing.
It’s Tuesday, so bring on TV Tuesday!
Last Saturday would have been the 70th birthday of the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley. Fans from across the world gathered in Memphis at Graceland to celebrate the birth of the King of Rock and Roll. But Elvis was more than just the king of the musical world. He made tried to be the king of all media with appearances on TV, his movies, etc. This week, we take a look at the King of Rock and Roll.
1. Did you watch any of the Elvis movie marathons, celebrations or retrospectives on various channels over the weekend?
Nope. I don’t dislike his movies; I just didn’t have any time this past weekend.
2. Do you have a favorite Elvis movie? If so, which one?
Probably GI Blues.
3. Elvis’s appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show caused quite a bit of controversy and had the censors worried about his dancing. Looking back, it’s nothing compared to what the censors allow on TV today. What is the most outrageous thing you’ve seen on TV recently?
Jeez, you’ve only got to turn the thing on any more any the lines are being redrawn. The most outrageous thing? It’s hard to say.
~ BONUS ~ Elvis’s appearance on the Ed Sullivan show was a huge deal. If you were old enough to have actually seen Elvis when he appeared on the show, did you watch? What’d you think at the time? Share any memories you might have related to the event. What is your favorite Elvis TV moment or special?
I don’t remember watching Elvis on that particular special, but I do remember seeing him on TV. I wasn’t in to Elvis all that much, so it wasn’t a big deal to me.
The finally have it up! Here we go with TV Tuesday.
Welcome to the first TV Tuesday of 2005! It’s that special time of year–when we look back at the year that was and look forward to the year that will be. A lot of people make resolutions too. So, this week, we’re gonna have a bit of looking forward and bit of looking back…
1. Did you watch more or less TV during the holidays? Did you sample any new shows in repeats or watch reruns of your favorites to catch-up?
I watched less. There was simply too much to DO other than watch TV.
2. Did you get any TV on DVD as a gift during the holiday season?
Nope; didn’t ask for any, either. Well, I did buy myself the DVD of Body Double.
3. Which do you like more–watching the ball drop in NYC or all the college football bowl games?
Definitely the bowl games. I especially liked the Capital One Bowl where the Hawkeyes pulled out a last-second win!
4. Looking forward–are there any mid-season replacements shows or any returning shows your anxious to see?
Of course. I am looking forward to this summer’s Dead Like Me third season.
~ BONUS ~ If you watched Dick Clark’s Rocking New Year’s Eve (hosted by Regis), rate this year’s event without Mr. Clark. Was it good, bad? Just OK? Did you miss Dick Clark or was Regis enough for you?
Didn’t watch it; haven’t watched it for years.
It’s time for TV Tuesday!
It’s the end of the year and it seems as if everyone is coming up with a list of the top television events and shows of 2004. So why not do the same thing for those of us who really know–the TV Tuesday crowd?
1. List your top shows/TV moments of the year. You can do top five, top ten, however you want.
Well since I don’t watch much network TV, those shows are out. Cold Pizza is a great show, but I don’t know if it is new this year. I really like Dinner for Five. Another one that could only have a limited run that was great was Rocked with Gina Gershon. Also, I like Tripping the Rift. Another good show is Dead Like Me, but it is only on during the so-called second season of TV.
2. List the best new TV show you’ve seen this year.
Rocked with Gina Gershon.
3. Tell us the worst new TV show you sampled this year.
Any of the so-called reality shows. Any of the contrived shows that were shams where someone was to choose their spouse, or someone was to get a job, or they “traded” spouses or parents. Jeez, do people really watch that crap? Even Survivor has lost its appeal to me; I watched the first season, was an on/off for the second and now it’s just bad.
4. Is there a show that got the axe last year that you wish hadn’t?
I’m not sure. Again, as I don’t watch much network TV I don’t really keep up on what shows keep going and which ones get the axe. Rocked with Gina Gershon had to end as it was about a promo tour for a movie.
5. What show that left the airwaves this last year had the best finale?
I feel like a broken record. I don’t watch much network TV so I don’t know what was cancelled and don’t know what had a finale.
It’s Tuesday and that means TV Tuesday! Let’s have some fun!
Only four more days until Christmas! And then means only one thing–only four more days of Christmas specials! Every year, there are classics that are shown and a couple of new specials try to gain the title of classic. This week, we’ll look at those Christmas specials.
1. What is your favorite Christmas special?
I have three favorites: “A Christmas Carol”, “Miracle on 34th Street” and “White Christmas”. The first two have been done and redone so many times that there has to be a version that you like somewhere. The third is a classic for the music as much as anything else.
2. Do you have a Christmas special that you don’t care for as much?
While the puppet versions of some of the specials were OK when I was a kid they simply look fake now. Doesn’t matter what the story is.
3. One recent trend is making sequels to popular or successful Christmas specials. Do you like or dislike this trend? Why?
Well, if it is of my favorite three (see #1 above) I hope they make more sequels. It’s kind of cool to compare and contrast them to the original; especially the remakes and sequels of “A Christmas Carol”. I like it because I like the original.
4. Is there a book, story or song just waiting to be turned into a great Christmas special?
None that I know of. Of course, I would have said the same thing about “The Polar Express” last year!?!
~ BONUS ~ Share some of your favorite memories of Christmas specials growing up. Also, if you have kids, what is the one Christmas special that you look forward to sharing with them either when they’re old enough or each year?
The tradition we started when the kids were small is to go to Christmas Eve service at church and then drive around town OOO-ing and AAAH-ing at all the Christmas light displays. Some people here in town really get in to the whole Christmas lights thing; I think their electric bill for December is more than doubled any other month of the year. (I plan to include pictures of some of the more elaborate ones this year) Anyway, we’d drive around and look at all the lights eating chocolate covered cherries. It was (and continues to be) a pretty cool tradition. We started it when ZDog was in 2nd or 3rd grade (7 or 8 years old); he is now 23 — does 15 years make a tradition?
Looks like it’s back in action after a week off… it’s TV Tuesday!
It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Well, that is unless you’re a TV fan. December is that time of year when the November sweeps are over and it’s slim pickings for new episodes of our favorite shows. But, most TV shows worth their salt have a holiday-themed episode. And this week, we’ll look at those holiday-themed episodes.
1. What’s the best holiday-themed episode you’ve seen this year? (Or you can go with the worst).
Since I don’t watch hardly any network TV and I’m not in to a series, I don’t really have a holiday-themed “best” or “worst” show.
2. What’s your all-time favorite holiday-themed episode of any show?
Not really sure; most of the M*A*S*H episodes for Christmas were really good. I particularly liked the Married with Children episode that was a spoof of Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” where Sam Kinison played the “angel” sent to Al to straighten him out about Christmas.
3. Is there any show that did a holiday-theme episode that you avoid like bad eggnog?
I simply don’t have enough space here to devote to not only holiday-theme episodes but to entire series of shows that I avoid like bad eggnog.
~ BONUS ~Jaded and cynical, sweet and sappy, somewhere in between. How do you prefer your holiday-themed episodes of your favorite shows?
I like somewhere in between. I really like the story “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens and like pretty much any show that does an episode like that; even a spoof of it is good.
That’s how long I’ve been waiting, but it looks like there will be no TV Tuesday this week as the questions have not been posted on the site. Oh well…
It’s Tuesday and we missed last week. But we’re back with TV Tuesday!
1. What’s your favorite thing you’ve watched in the past week?
At KC’s brother’s place, we watched Elf with ZDog, J, Eric and Brenda. It was quite enjoyable. Not only was the movie kind of cute, but the company was excellent.
2. Have you found anything new you liked? (You can use disliked or any other adjective you want.)
Not really.
3. For those who had access to them, did you see any really cool parades on TV?
Nah. I watched the football games this weekend. No parades for me.
~Bonus~ Holiday dinner: TV on or off?
During the meal it was off, but most of the rest of the time it was on.
