Are you more… #82

Wednesday already? Here’s Are you more…

01) Fast-paced big-city life or slower-paced small-town life?
I don’t mind a fast-paced life for a change once in a while, but I’m a fan of the slower-paced small town life. I’m living it.

02) A location chooser based on your job(s) or a location chooser based on proximity to friends and family?
Based on my job. Of course, KC and I have been here for over 20 years so many of our friends are here.

03) Fan of the allen key (hexagon-head) or hater of the allen key?
Indifferent. If I have a choice, I prefer square drive.

04) Someone who loves futons or someone who prefers more traditional couches and beds?
In the family room of our house, I spend most of my time sitting or lying on a futon. I’d prefer a reclining sectional sofa, but the futon works.

05) Grateful that winter is gone or anxious for summer to hurry up and get here?
BOTH! As with most guys, I like summber to get here. Any guy can tell you why!!

06) Grilled cheese sandwich with ham and tomato or just a grilled cheese sandwich?
Gimme the works! Don’t stop with the ham and tomato; add an egg and some lettuce too!

07) Simon Cowell or Paula Abdul?
Oh, God help me, an American Idol question. I don’t watch that show. As I’ve stated before on this blog, I think American Idol is a half-step up from The Gong Show. (Of course, Paula Abdul was yummy in the ’80s!)

08) A tiger or a bear?
Bear. They aren’t nearly as colorful as a tiger.

09) Believing that politicians make the world a better place or believing that the common man makes the world a better place?
Definitely the common man. Heck, the politicians have to convince the common man in order to get anything done anyway.

10) Driven by your loins or driven by your stomach?
When I was younger, I was definitely driven by my loins. Nowadays it’s leaning more to the stomach, though.

Are you more… #81

It’s been too long since I’ve last done Are you more…

01) A harsher critic of others or a harsher critic of yourself?
I am a harsher critic of myself than others.

02) One who thinks stealing is the bigger sin or one who thinks lying is the bigger sin?
I think stealing is a bigger sin. Being in IT support I lie all the time. You know: “Yes sir, the server will be back up in about 5 minutes….”

03) Fond of crayons for colouring or fond of paint for colouring?
Crayons. I’m not sophisticated enough for paint.

04) Someone who thinks they have all the tools they could need or someone who thinks you barely have the minimum number of tools to get by?
Barely the minimum. Can you actually HAVE too many tools? I don’t think so. I want as many tools as Norm Abram. That guy has more money spent on clamps than I have spent on all my tools!

05) McDonald’s or Burger King?
Man, this question is like asking if I prefer to eat catshit or dogshit! I want what’s behind the curtain, Monty!

06) Obsessive compulsive or whatever happens, happens?
I can get into OCD spells, but generally I’m a “whatevahhh” kind of person.

07) One who enjoys the company of small children (playing with blocks) or one who enjoys the company of senior citizens (playing bridge)?
I love playing with small children. They seem to view me as the Jolly Green Giant or something.

08) Someone who will vacuum-seal food before putting it in the freezer or someone who will just put it in the freezer?
Just toss it in the freezer; it isn’t going to be there THAT long anyway. There’s nothing in our freezer that’s been there more than a couple of months anyway.

09) More proud of your belches or more proud of your flatulence?
BOTH! And why not? They are magnificent! Hey! I’m a guy!

10) Possessed of a soothing voice or possessed or an order-barking voice?
Somewhere in the middle. I had to learn an order-barking voice back when I was a basketball coach, but generally I have a soothing voice – it’s definitely an asset in phone tech support.

Tool Usage Defined

Wanting to perform a public service, I thought I’d explain the actual purpose of a number of typical handyman tools. (As Red Green says: “If the women don’t find you handsome, they should at least fine you handy!”)

Other Thoughts on Huatulco

There were a few things that we did and that I noticed on this trip that were decidedly different than the other two trips KC and I have taken to Mexico. Here they are, in no particular order:

  • First off, I’d fly Mexicana Airlines again. While they weren’t exactly what you’d call punctual, they were courteous. Also, the food served on the plane was more than edible.
  • The Mexico City airport was rather interesting. With enough time, I did a fair amount of people watching. Let me tell you that there are MANY nationalities going through that airport. I heard Spanish (of course), English, French, Dutch, German and Portuguese. I know I heard some east Asian languages, but I’m not sure what they were.
  • I read a lot about issues with the resort where we stayed, especially with the front desk staff not having a good grasp of English. It couldn’t have been more wrong. All of the staff was great.
  • Far and away the rooms at this resort were larger than any we had before. In fact, you could have put two of the Iberostar rooms inside one Crown Pacific room. Also, the balcony was big enough to host a party of at least a dozen people; we never had that opportunity but it was available.
  • There was a funicular at this resort as it was built into a hillside and a lot of the sidewalks were pretty steep for walking. However, the funicular was out of order. The staff more than made up for it by having the trolley trucks going constantly. We never waited more than a few minutes to go up to our room or to go down to the beach.
  • When KC and I went to the Riviera Maya, we were told by our Apple reps there to not eat local and not drink local water; we were risking our health. This trip we did NOT do all-inclusive and ate local. What we were told before couldn’t be farther from the truth. We never once suffered “Montezuma’s Revenge”. The food, in fact, was excellent in the restaurants we tried.
  • Breezomatic purchased some of the local Huatulco coffee to bring back with her – it’s supposed to be the most cherished of all Mexican coffees. Never let it be said that our customs officers don’t have a sense of humor. On our return the customs officer in Chicago joked with us that “the dogs would be all over the coffee”; then kind of smiled and laughed with us. Quite a refreshing point of view.
  • The taxi drivers we had all spoke broken English at best; however, that didn’t stop us from carrying on a basic conversation about the cabbie asking where we were from and us asking what were good restaurants. Hey, it’s their country and we should have to learn their language.
  • On the plane ride back to the states, we met what I’d call an “ugly American”. First he’s complaining about the plane being late, then he’s on the plane telling anyone who would listen that “We showed Acapulco how to party” (yeah, RIGHT!). Then he’s complaining about waiting in line to take off on the plane. Then he’s making snide remarks to the flight attendants (who were quite cute, by the way). Then he’s complaining about the food and telling everyone he can’t wait to eat a Big Mac. Then he’s arguing with the flight attendant that he shouldn’t have to turn off his personal CD player. Geez, I wish people like that would just stay home. No wonder we have a bad reputation abroad.

Huatulco, Sí

Well, I said I was going to talk more about our vacation. We spent four nights in Huatulco, Mexico. I found inexpensive rates on the Apple Vacations site in their Last Minute Specials. I’ll do a series of posts that go through the vacation chronologically.

All Work and No Play

Makes BillH a tired dog. We’ve been doing 10 hour days at work now for a week. I’m not getting as much done as I’ve been doing our deskside support as well as my regular job of second level support. What with the scripting of new program rollouts and the support of my specialty areas, I’ve simply been swamped. I get home and I’m tired. I do a couple of mindless games and then it’s snooze a bit while pretending to watch some movie on TV, then wake up from the snooze and head to bed. Yuck! Oh well, it will end tomorrow. Not necessarily the 10 hour days, but the deskside support will end. Also, next week I’m on vacation and it’s going to be a great one. I’ll have pictures up after we get back. Hopefully I can get the “guest bloggers” to make some posts for my while I’m gone…

Wow!

All that work I went through to set up a web server on my LAN. All that work of setting it up with Suse Linux, making it work with MySQL and WordPress and all. Yeah, that took most of a weekend. All that work…. is now easily done with WordPress on a USB stick. I found the link on the WordPress Dashboard under “Other News”. It took me about two hours to set this up. The hardest part was to remove some things from my USB flash drive; the installation takes up 121 Mb on my flash drive and it’s only a 256 Mb drive. Now, I have a working local copy of WordPress which will work on any Windows computer with a USB port.

Now I can develop themes and work on plugins on the local copy anywhere. How cool is that?

En Absentia?

No, I’m not absent. I’m not sick (any more), I’m not depressed, I’m not sad. None of that. I’m just busy IRL. Work is getting more demanding and it takes more energy there. Also, I’ve been busy repainting the bathroom (I’m done with that now) and doing some vacation planning.

As far as “sick” goes, I went with friends Friday to celebrate a birthday. We went to Coralville to a restaurant called The HuHot Mongolian Grill. While I had a good time and loved the food, the food didn’t like me. I broke out in a rash with an allergic reaction to something I ate there. I’ve never had that happen before, so I can’t tell you exactly what it was. All I know is I had red blotches that itched like crazy all over my body. Kind of like chicken pox without the contagion. They are all but gone now, though. For a couple of days the morning routine was take a shower, dry off, coat myself with CalaGel, cover everything up because it looked gross, then head to work and try not to scratch myself so much. Thank God that’s almost gone. I didn’t want to go work out because it would show and I’d be all embarrassed about it.

Are you more… #79

My goodness; it looks like all I do anymore is Are you more…

01) Unassuming or naive?
I’m probably more naive than unassuming. Yeah, that’s right.

02) Likely to vote based on candidate’s overall stance on issues or likely to vote based on political party?
I’ll vote on the overall stance; however, many of the overall stances are planks in the platform of each party.

03) A fan of country pop music or a fan of rock pop music?
If these two are my only choices, then rock pop. Country music is an oxymoron. If I had my choice of ANY music, it would be blues rock.

04) A good casserole sort or a main dish and two sides sort?
Hey, man, when it comes to food it doesn’t matter. I like a good casserole and I like a main dish and two sides.

05) Pleased with your country’s team’s performance at the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics or disappointed with their performance?
Pleased. While I am a sports fan, I didn’t really get into the Olympics this year. Not really sure why…

06) Gobsmacked or lolligagged?
Gobsmacked by an everlasting gobstopper!!!

07) Indiana Jones or James Bond?
While I like both, my choice has to be James Bond. I believe that every man has got up after pleasuring his woman, looked into the mirror and said “Bond, James Bond.”

08) A believer that there are strict rules about line-ups (e.g. no cutting in line) or one who will let little things like that slide?
Hey, if I have to wait in line then so does everybody else. The line forms here, bucko!

09) One who understands and can chart Boolean logic in speech or one who either can’t precisely map it out or doesn’t think it’s that important?
Chart it? Heck, my English teachers in school said I was the only one who could diagram a sentence faster than they could write it on the board.

10) Someone who will eat when you’re hungry or someone who will eat because it’s time to eat?
BOTH!!! I don’t EVER pass up a meal. I’ll even eat just to be polite!
