I have spent some time with the Datenator calendar. I think it is quite adequate for my needs. I have changed a few things, though:
- I limited the formatting of the events. There were many choices for font size, font face, font style and font color. I set the font size on the calendar to 10 point, I set the font face to Verdana, I set the font style to normal. I also limited the colors to 4 and labelled them according to the event type: Birthday, Anniversary, Holiday, and Other.
- I drastically changed the CSS so that instead of the grey/black theme that was the default it now has a nice blue/grey/black theme. I also created a separate color for the background of weekend days.
- I re-ordered the days. It was a European style calendar where both Saturday and Sunday were on the right, which I didn’t like. Now Sunday is on the left and Saturday is on the right.
- Went to SourceForge and requested that the author consider allowing recurring events. That is the one thing I think is very lacking in Datenator – no recurring events. I will have to manually edit each event to change it to the next year. (YUCK!)
One more thing: I don’t have to worry about the htaccess file in order to limit access to the calendar. I have this function built in to my web space control panel. I can set it and forget it. Now all I have to do is notify all family members and set them up so they can enter their own dates.
