What the ….?

This is something else! Straight from Microsoft’s knowledge base! Playing music in safe mode is a symptom of fan failure?!? Gimme a break!

Branching Out

I’m branching out into feeble web design. I describe it as feeble because I know my limitations! A friend of mine has a website and I was on it the other day. He uses Microsoft FrontPage (UGH!) to edit the static pages. He wants more versatility and he wants to be able to make changes easier. Also, he wanted a public on-line calendar for events. By the way, he also has webspace and a domain. (I’ll let all of you in on this when the site gets off the ground with its new format.) Oh, and one more by the way, his site is on a Windows server. This leads to some changes in the way I think about dynamic content (like what appears here).

I use Movable Type, which does all of the content publishing for me. I have edited the templates and the end result is what you see here. My webspace server is a LAMP server: Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP/Perl. This is perfect for Movable Type. He can’t use Movable Type because there is no MySQL database on his server, only Access databases can be used. Also, for server-side scripting he has to use ASP; there is no PHP on his server. So, off we go to check out the options.

I found an on-line calendar that, while not as detailed or as extensive as the one I use in PHP, is quite capable of doing what he wants. I use Datenator for my on-line calendar; it works quite well. For him, I found a nice one called ASP Calendar Manager from Ocean12. It is completely ASP and is a nice calendar. (You’ll see the calendar after the site is up an running in the new format).

We have settled on Blogger for the content publishing software. It will meet all his needs, which include team blogs. He will be the main “administrator” of the blog and have four others who will also be enabled to make posts. Of course, we have to set it all up. You can view a static design of the site here. Now we just have to set up the users in Blogger and finish the template publishing. Sounds like a weekend job to me!

More Ghosts from the Past

Here is another one of those lists. Again, I was looking for something else and got completely sidetracked. Maybe I should take some kind of medication?!

More Changes

Yep, I just can’t stop myself. I made more changes to the look of the blog:

  1. Added the little guy in the lower right; he kind of reminds me of me. (Except maybe he has more hair!)
  2. Changed the banner to a graphic; I kind of like it. I created it in Xara 3D and can make changes to it easily. In case you are interested, the white text is the Geekabyte font and the green text is the Dad Hand font; both are freeware downloads if you want them (I don’t remember the site, just did a Google search for freeware fonts.)
  3. Ditched the denim background in favor of all black; I was getting tired of the denim.
  4. Changed the Syndicate contents on the lower left side bar; added an MT graphic and my own graphic.
  5. Changed the sidebar divider border line to green from black to give it some “stand out” ability and to tie in the extra text on the new graphic banner

All in all I think it looks better. Do you?

Another Blast from the Past

I was looking through that same folder on my computer for old stuff; well, actually I was looking for some information in a specific file; and I tripped across this gem. Thought I’d let everyone in on it:

Microsoft – Star Trek Style

I was searching for something on my hard drive and came across this gem. You see, I have been on-line for over a decade. First it was a local BBS system, where I began posting my stupid opinions and picking up jokes. Later, I moved on to larger forums. Today, I post here (DUH!) as well as forums on Yahoo.

I came across this file, dated August of 1996. I don’t know who the original author was; if you know please drop me a line. It is a fun read if you know anything about Star Trek – The Next Generation and Microsoft.

Something Is In The Air

I don’t know what, but I’m feeling kind of dicey tonight. Maybe it was brought on by no Friday Five, or maybe I’m just being silly. Anyway, here are a few of the old “no-arms-no-legs” jokes. Add any if you want:

I Don’t Believe It!

I really don’t! I went the the Friday Five web site and it says “none this week”. Does that mean I won’t have any Friday posts? I think not. I have my own in mind, but it will have to wait until I leave work (taking a quick break right now).

Iowa State in the Final Four

Doesn’t matter which Iowa State team you’re talking about, both the men’s and women’s basketball teams made the NIT final four tonight. The Iowa State women beat St. Joseph’s 66-58 in Hilton Coliseum in their game played this afternoon. The Iowa State men beat Marquette 77-69 in Hilton Coliseum in their game this evening. Yeah, Hilton was a busy place today!

This is only the second time in NIT history that a school has both men’s and women’s teams in the final four. The only other time it happened was in 1998 when Penn State accomplished this feat. Congratulations to men’s coach Wayne Morgan (20 wins in his first season as head coach) and women’s coach Bill Fennelly on great seasons!

Very Interesting Development

I make no qualms about being a long-time Los Angeles Lakers fan. I’ve been a Lakers fan since I was in sixth grade. It seems like just yesterday when Jerry West was ripped out of the MVP for carrying the Lakers to the finals. ANYWAY…

Last night, the Lakers whipped the Sacramento Kings 115-91. Heck, it was 33-14 at the end of the first quarter; after that the Lakers pretty much coasted. It was nice to see Karl Malone back off the injured list; he’s really got a nice game to fit into the triangle offense. The Kings never seemed to get into a rhythm as the Lakers applied a lot of defense. I only mention this because the Kings are presently the top team in the NBA West, with the Lakers only 2½ games behind them. The Minnesota Timberwolves are just 2 games behind the Kings. There are only about 10 games left in the season for the teams; perhaps the Lakers can gain the top spot in the West, who knows?

Good Deed for the Day

Got a call from our church that they needed it networked. That is, they have a cable modem and get email and web access to the pastor’s computer. I updated that computer last fall with a new motherboard (Soyo K7VTA), CPU (AMD Athlon 1800+) and RAM (256 Mb). While it is no speed burner, it sure beats the P133 with 24 Mb of RAM that it had before. Now they want the church secretary’s PC on the internet so she can also check email and have web access. My first look was to TigerDirect, where I have had great success ordering in the past. Turns out they have a D-Link DI-604 router (refurbished) on sale for $19.95. I snapped up one of them, got a couple of LAN cables from work (donated, of course) and went to church tonight. It was a simple install and in no time I was browsing on both computers. Since nothing was said about sharing files or sharing printers, I didn’t even bother with that. So now we have a fully internet capable church office. WOW!

Today in History

I had another “great idea” and wanted to add a “Today in History” item to my side bar. You know, something that lists famous birthdays and events. (I may expand it by importing more historical dates later.) I found exactly what I was looking for in Andrew Ziem’s CDAY. It is a very nice calendar that displays certain events and holidays. It does meet my number one priority: it is open source. Another nice element is that it creates links to Wikipedia, an on-line encyclopedia, to the entry listed. Very cool script, highly configurable, uses MySQL backend to store the information. A good script. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to add the “Today in History” type area to their site.
